Please note that Indian rupees are also accepted in Bhutan as the Ngultrum is pegged against the rupee.

CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS AND ATMS:

It is not recommended to rely on credit cards as they are accepted on a very limited basis in Bhutan. Please note: do not attempt to use a bank card at an ATM in Bhutan as it will only accept Bhutanese bank cards. It is recommended to organise cash in advance before travelling to Bhutan.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

There are larger hotels in Phuentsholing, Paro and Thimphu that will be able to exchange foreign currency.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

These are recommended as an alternative to cash, and are widely accepted. It is best to get these in US Dollars. Go to the Bank of Bhutan to ensure a better service.

Bhutan's official name is the Kingdom of Bhutan and is situated in South Asia, surrounded by India, Tibet and China, as well as the Himalayan Mountains. This ancient nation used to be very distanced from the rest of the world but with development of such things as internet and television, this country has become more accessible. However, they strive to keep their ancient traditions alive and even have a philosophy called "Gross National Happiness". The Bhutanese government also takes seriously the upkeep of the environment there. The capital is Thimphu and the official language is Dzongkha.

ECONOMY:

The economy of Bhutan is actually one of the smallest in the world, although it does have rapid growth. The main elements are forestry, farming and tourism. Bhutan also provides India with hydroelectric power. There is tax on any income over Nu 100,000 per annum but very few people qualify. This nation places considerable emphasis on the happiness of its people, and that is where the term Gross National Happiness came from - the King said this was more important than Gross National Product.
