COUNTRY OVERVIEW:
The Czech Republic is a country in central Europe. It is surrounded by Poland, Germany, Austria and Slovakia. Once part of the Austrian Empire and Austria-Hungary, the Czech Republic has experienced a very unique experience in relation to its independence. Once known as Czechoslovakia, the country was forced under Communist rule in 1948, but the peaceful Velvet Revolution of 1989 put paid to the regime. Czechoslovakia was peacefully divided into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. The capital is Prague and official language is Czech.
POPULATION:
Around 10 million.
ECONOMY:
The Czech Republic has a healthy 'high-income' economy. Despite being a member of the EU, this country has not yet adopted the Euro. Originally, they were due to join in 2010, then 2012, but this is in review. Growth has been experienced by the Czech Republic thanks to exports to the EU - predominantly Germany - and foreign investment.
