COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

The Falkland Islands are a group of islands in the South Atlantic Ocean - the nearest mainland are Argentina, South Georgia and British Antarctic Territory. The islands are self-governed but are an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. There is conflict over who should reign over the islands - Argentina also claim sovereignty over them. So much so, in fact, that there has been conflict there in the early 1980s, when war raged between the two countries. The United Kingdom were victorious of that war (which only raged for two months). Most of the inhabitants of the islands are British but can claim Argentine citizenship. The capital is Stanley and the official language is English.

POPULATION:

Around 4,000.

ECONOMY:

The main element of the economy has been sheep farming, but since the Falklands War, tourism has taken over as the mainstay, as has fishing.
