Most major credit cards are accepted. There are ATM machines mainly on Tahiti but some of the smaller islands also have a few of these.

This can be done at the airport, banks and there are some hotels authorised to carry out currency exchange. You may find some shops in Papeete can also offer this service.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

This is the recommended form of foreign currency in French Polynesia. Best in US dollars or Euros.

Mon-Fri 0745-1530 There are some banks open on Saturday morning until 1130.

French Polynesia has one of the largest economies in Oceania. The economy is described as 'moderately developed' and depends on import, tourism and financial assistance from France. The agriculture is predominantly coconuts, vegetables, fruit and vanilla. There are natural resources in the form of fish, timber and cobalt. The most famous export is the black Tahitian pearl.
