Please note: There has been much credit card fraud reported in Gambia. Your chosen hotel may be able to accept a major credit card if arranged in advance. However, most businesses in Gambia only accept cash or travellers cheques. There are ATM machines available in larger cities.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

Currency exchange is available at the airport, and there are banks in larger cities and towns that can offer this service. Note: it is advisable to carry sufficient cash as Gambia has a cash economy.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

These are best in Sterling or Euros but are not recommended.

CURRENCY RESTRICTIONS:

Export of local currency up to the amount imported and declared. Import of foreign currency has no restrictions. Please note, however, that some currencies will not be accepted or exchanged within Gambia. French African Francs are accepted.

COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

Officially the Republic of Gambia, this is a country in Western Africa. It is the smallest country in Africa. Gambia joined the Commonwealth in 1965 after gaining independence from the United Kingdom. There was a brief period of military rule in the mid 1990s but since then it enjoys relative stability. The capital is Banjul and the official language is English.

POPULATION:

Around 1.7 million.

ECONOMY:

The economy of Gambia is liberal and market-based. Export earnings come from peanuts and there is a significant tourism industry. A proportion of the GDP comes from agriculture - crops, fishing, livestock, forestry and groundnuts.
