COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

Guyana's full name is the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, and was known before independence as British Guiana. Guyana is the only country of the Commonwealth of Nations which is located on the mainland of South America. The official language is English but there are other recognised languages including Spanish and Guyanese Creole, among other regional languages. The capital is Georgetown.

ECONOMY:

The main element of the economy of Guyana is agriculture. There are many largescale problems in the country, including a shortage of skilled labour forces. Despite the world economic crisis of 2008, Guyana experienced a small increase in growth. The main exports from Guyana are rice and sugar, as well as mining of gold and bauxite.
