Most major credit cards are accepted in larger shops, restaurants and hotels. ATM machines are available in towns and widely in Amman.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

Easiest in banks and bureaux de change, as well as hotels. You can keep an eye on daily rates of exchange via newspapers, who publish these.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

Not recommended as there may be some issues have these accepted. If issued by a UK bank, travellers cheques may be accepted at banks and bureaux de change. If necessary, then they are best in US dollars.

Sat-Thurs 0830-1500. Note: banks may close early during Ramadan.

COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

Jordan's full name is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and is a country in Southwest Asia. Jordan has been under Arab and Muslim culture since the 7th Century - except for a very short period where it was under British rule. Jordan is a constitutional monarchy. The capital is Amman and the official language is Arabic. There are many historic and religious sites and the Dead Sea in Jordan, which is a huge draw for tourists.

ECONOMY:

The main element of the economy in Jordan is the services sector. There is a high proportion of skilled workers in the country, especially when compared to other countries in the region. Tourism also brings in a high revenue - around 11% of the GDP comes from tourism. The country has pursued economic reform and is working on ways to reduce its dependence on oil - since the fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, Jordan as lost the oil grants it had with his regime.
