COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

Liberia is officially called the Republic of Liberia and is located in West Africa off the coast. The country was originally a colony created for the freed slaves of the USA, who became the new government of Liberia, based upon that of the US. The government was overthrown in 1980 through a military coup and since then there was been great unrest in the country. The capital is Monrovia and the official language is English.

POPULATION:

Around 3.5 million.

ECONOMY:

The economy was devastated through its long period of civil war. Diamond exploitation featured during the war - the country became a major trader in "blood diamonds". There was a ban on Liberian diamond exports enforced by the UN but this was lifted in 2007. The country is now trying to stabilize its infrastructure and economy.
