NOTE: LD20, 10, 5, 1, 1/2 and 1/4 dinars.

COIN: 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 dirhams and 1/2 and 1/4 dinars.

US DOLLAR ACCEPTED?

Yes, in some shops.

CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS AND ATMS:

Credit cards are NOT widely used in Libya - some larger hotels or banks may accept them. There are very few ATM machines in the capital - Note, CASH IS BEST FOR LIBYA.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

This is not recommended to do within Libya. It would be best to arrange this in advance and to take sufficient amounts of cash for the entirety of your stay.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

Not recommended; these are not accepted in general.

BANKING HOURS:

Sat-Thurs 0700-1400 and 1600-1800. Note banks are closed Friday

CURRENCY RESTRICTIONS:

Import and export of local currency is prohibited.

The full name of Libya is: Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. This country is located in North Africa. It is the fourth largest country in Africa with the vast majority being desert. The capital is Tripoli and the official language is Arabic - although Berber is also spoken as are English and Italian.

Around 6 million.

ECONOMY:

The main element of the economy in Libya is the oil sector. In fact, it was once one of the richest countries in the world. It has much lower levels of poverty in comparison to its neighbouring countries. The country has implemented reforms and sectors besides that of oil have been expanded. Besides large oil companies returning to Libya are tourists - it has increased in recent years.
