Martinique is located in the Caribbean Sea and is an overseas department of France. Therefore, it is part of the European Union. The culture of the island mixes both Caribbean and French aspects. The official language is French although many inhabitants speak Martinician Creole.

Martinique relies on trade. There is sugarcane production on the island, which is predominantly used to make rum. Other agriculture accounts for some of the GDP, and bananas are being exported more in recent times. Tourism is a key element to Martinique's economy.
