Do not rely on credit cards in Mauritania - some hotels may accept them but check in advance. ATM machines are not frequent.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

When you arrive, you will be given a currency declaration form which you must keep. Currency exchange services are available at the airport and main banks in the capital.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

Do not rely on these are they are not accepted widely. If necessary, they are best in US dollars.

Sun-Thurs 0800-1600.

COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

Mauritania is officially called the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and is located in northwest Africa. The name stems from an ancient Berber kingdom called Mauretania. Note: the government was overthrown by a non-violent military coup d'etat in 2008, check your government homepage before travelling to Mauritania. The official languages are Arabic and French, and the capital is Nouakchott.

Around 3 million.

ECONOMY:

Mauritania relies on subsistence agriculture and livestock rearing for livelihoods. Natural resources include iron ore, which makes up around half of the exports. There has been discovery of oil deposits but it remains to be seen if these will be exploited to aid the country.
