Credit cards are accepted in main banks and larger shops and hotels in the capital. ATM machines are only available in the capital.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

There are currency exchange services are available in main banks and bureaux de change. The easiest currencies to exchange are the Russian Rouble and the US dollar. Note: do not attempt to use Chinese money in Mongolia.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

These are accepted and are best in US dollars. Note they are tricky to exchange outside of the capital city.

Mon-Fri 0900-1300 and 1400-1800.

CURRENCY RESTRICTIONS:

There are no restrictions on import and export of foreign currency provided declared.

COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

Mongolia is located in East and Central Asia. It is bordered by both Russia and China. Mongolia was once the Mongol Empire, which was founded by Genghis Khan in the 13th century. Since then it has traditionally been ruled by nomadic empires. The nomadic life is key to the Mongolian to this day. The capital is Ulan Bator and the official language is Mongolian.

ECONOMY:

The main elements of the economy of Mongolia are mining and agriculture. There are plenty of natural resources in the country and these are produced on an industrial level. Herding is widely carried out by non-urban population, and this is based on subsistence not export.
