NOTE: PEN 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10.

COIN: PEN 5, 2 and 1, and 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 céntimos.

US DOLLAR ACCEPTED?

Yes, widely.

CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS AND ATMS:

Most major credit cards are accepted, mainly within the capital. ATM machines are widespread.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

Outside of the capital, it is extremely hard to exchange any currency other than US dollars.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

These are not recommended outside of Lima and in general these do not have very wide acceptance. Best in US dollars.

BANKING HOURS:

Mon-Fri 0900-1800, Banks open until 1300 on Saturdays.

The Republic of Peru is located in South America. It was once the home of the ancient Inca Empire. The capital is Lima and the official language is Spanish - although many other regional languages are spoken.

Around 28 million.

ECONOMY:

Peru is categorized as a developing country and much of the population suffers under poverty. The main exports are copper, gold and zinc as well as textiles. The country has undergone many changes economically with many changes to ruling powers over the centuries. Growth is fairly sustained.
