Taiwan is an island in East Asia. It is governed by the Republic of China but has been under control of Japan and the People's Republic of China also claims control of it, despite its being under Republic of China's administration.

The economy of Taiwan is capitalist and based mainly on exports. It is a major foreign investor in countries including Thailand, China and other Asian countries. Taiwan suffered under recession in 2001 and unemployment reached its worst level since 1973, during the oil crisis.
