Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe. It has been the home and centre of the East Slavs for centuries. It was once part of the Russian Empire as well as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It has been independent since 1991, with the end of the Soviet Union. The capital is Kiev and the official language is Ukrainian.

ECONOMY:

During the Soviet period, Ukraine was important for its agricultural and industrial input. It has had a market economy since the end of the Soviet Union. It was tough for Ukraine to make the transition and much of the country fell into poverty. Progress has been slow. Ukraine produces a large amount of spacecraft and other transport vehicles. It relies on Russia for the majority of its natural resources including gas and oil.
