CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS AND ATMS:
Most major credit cards will be accepted in some areas in main tourist areas but please note cash is preferred (see below).
CURRENCY EXCHANGE:
If you are without 'special status' (ie a tourist or on business) you will be required to pay using hard currency - US dollars are best. Foreign exchange services are available at banks and bureaux de change. Do not attempt to change money on the black market as penalties are tough.
TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:
Not recommended as they are accepted very seldom.
BANKING HOURS:
Mon-Fri 0900-1800. Some banks open Sat 0900-1500.
CURRENCY RESTRICTIONS:
Import and export of local currency is prohibited for non residents.
COUNTRY OVERVIEW:
Uzbekistan is officially called the Republic of Uzbekistan and is located in Central Asia. It was once part of the Soviet Union and before that the Russian Empire. The majority of today's population are from the Uzbek ethnic group. The capital is Tashkent and the official language is Uzbek.
POPULATION:
Around 27 million.
ECONOMY:
Uzbekistan has an economy which produces many commodities including cotton, minerals and natural gas. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan officially became a market economy but despite this still has tough controls which has made foreign investment hard to gain. There are some issues with many in the international community over Uzbekistan's use of child labour - many large world corporations now boycott the use of Uzbek cotton.
