NOTE: VUV5,000, 1,000, 500 and 200.

COIN: VUV100, 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1.

US DOLLAR ACCEPTED:

No - but the Australian Dollar is widely accepted in the main towns.

CREDIT/DEBIT CARDS AND ATMS:

Most major credit cards are accepted but American Express and Diners Club have a little more trouble than others. You will find ATM machines at the main bank and at supermarket.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE:

Foreign exchange services are available at banks and the airport.

TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES:

These are widely accepted and are best in Australian Dollars and US dollars.

BANKING HOURS:

Mon-Fri 0800-1500. Bureaux de change are open at similar hours though many are open later.

The Republic of Vanuatu is located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is an archipelago which means it is made up of many islands. The capital is Port Villa and the official languages are Bislama, English and French.

ECONOMY:

The main part of the economy of Vanuatu is based on subsistence agriculture. The country is a tax haven so there is a fair amount of offshore banking. Tourism is another main element of the economy. The area is often hit by earthquake which has had a negative effect on the islands as they have required extensive rebuilding in places like Port Villa which have suffered great damage.
