COUNTRY OVERVIEW:

Officially called the Republic of Zimbabwe, this country was once known as Rhodesia in three versions - Southern, Republic of and Zimbabwe Rhodesia. It is located in Southern Africa. The capital is Harare and the official language is English although most people speak Shona. Please note that Zimbabwe is undergoing conflict and therefore may be a dangerous place to visit - please see government homepages before travel.

POPULATION:

Around 13 million.

ECONOMY:

The main elements of Zimbabwe's economy have centred around export of minerals, agriculture and tourism. The economy has seen a decline which has been mainly blamed on the corruption of the Robert Mugabe regime. Tourism, for example, is now on the edge of a disastrous downturn. Inflation there is huge and is the second worst inflation 'spike' in history.
