What is Gadget Insurance?

Gadget insurance is a type of insurance designed to cover the electronic gadgets you carry around with you on a regular basis, including:

  • Mobile phones
  • Smartphones
  • Sat Nav systems
  • Laptops
  • Cameras digital or other
  • Camcorders
  • MP3 players (including iPods)
  • Portable games consoles

With a gadget insurance policy tailored to your needs, you can rest assured that if your gadget gets:

  • Stolen
  • Lost
  • Accidentally damaged (laptop crashes, knocks or falls to your phone) will receive a replacement device and a payout to cover your costs, within the terms of your policy.

How Much does it Cost?

You can usually find very reasonably priced policies for gadget insurance. Expect to pay anything from 3.99 to 30 a month, depending on what type of policy you choose and the type of gadget you want to insure.

What is Covered?

Under most gadget insurance policies, the main areas that are covered include:

  • Accidental damage
  • Breakdown
  • Loss
  • Theft
  • Accessory cover
  • Worldwide cover
  • Cover for a set period (often 12 months)

It is obviously wise to compare policies and providers thoroughly, as there are many different types on offer. Many gadget insurance providers offer a range of cover levels, for you to choose but some things may not be covered under the more basic options so do look over them carefully.

Is there an Excess?

As with any form of insurance, you may be required to pay an excess in the event that you make a claim. Most excesses on gadget insurance are reasonable expect to pay around 25 but this is certainly a feature worth comparing when you shop around for a policy.

How Much can I Claim?

The amount you can claim depends largely on the gadget you are insuring and what cover level you have chosen. There may be a maximum claim limit, for this anything from 1,000 to 5,000 is normal but providers and policies do vary.

How do I Receive my Claim?

In the event that you have to make a claim, bear in mind that you may not receive cash. Your policy provider may only offer to replace or repair your gadget for you. Make sure you find out how your claim is made before you buy a policy, so that you are absolutely clear what happens if you do have to make one.

What if I Go Abroad?

The majority of gadget insurance providers offer worldwide cover on your gadgets, so if you go overseas you will still be protected under your policy. Remember to find out about this and for how long you are covered abroad; many policies cover you for up to 90 days overseas but no longer.
