Motorists no longer need their car insurance certificate when taxing their vehicle

Under changes that are coming into force this week, motorists will no longer need to dig out their vehicle insurance certificate when taxing their vehicle. Their details will instead be cross-checked on an electronic system. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will use centrally-held databases to ensure that vehicles are insured.

These changes have come ahead of the removal of the tax disc which will also be replaced by an electronic system in October. Under the new system, uninsured vehicles will be sent reminder letters. Those that do not obtain car insurance will receive a fixed penalty notice of 100, followed by wheel clamping, impounding or prosecution with a maximum fine of 1000.

"Getting rid of needless bits of paper, making changes to free up motorists' time, while saving money for the taxpayer, is all part of our commitment to get rid of unnecessary red tape," said Roads Minister Robert Goodwill.

If police officers discover a motorists driving without car insurance, they can hand down a fixed penalty of 200 plus six penalty points. This case could go to court where the maximum fine would be 5000 with the potential for disqualification or six to eight penalty points.
